¡Llevo seis meses viviendo en Colombia y me ha encantado cada segundo! Mi familia y amigos estuvieron conmocionados cuando yo les dije que mudaba a Colombia. La gente todavía ve el país como un lugar muy peligroso. Por supuesto tiene problemas, por ejemplo corrupción, pero ha habido mucho cambios positivos en los últimos diez años – más recientemente el acuerdo de paz con las FARC. Cuando la gente piensa en Colombia, inmediatamente piensan en Pablo Escobar y las guerras de los carteles. ¡Pero quiero decirles que Colombia es mucho más y te diré por que deberías visitarla ahora!
En primer lugar: la gente. La gente Colombiana es asombrosa y todas las personas que he conocido son muy acogedores. Está obvio cuando entré al país por primera vez. La primera ciudad que visité fue Pasto y me quedé con una familia colombiana que me hizo sentir muy cómodo. ¡Esto me ha seguido pasando en mi tiempo aquí – los colombianos son los mejores anfitriones! Siempre intentarán ayudarte¡Para mí, eso es muy importante cuando viajo a cualquier sitio en el mundo y es una gran razón por la que amo Colombia!
En segundo lugar, existen muchos lugares increíbles para visitar y muchas cosas para ver en Colombia. ¡He viajado mucho por Colombia durante mis seis meses aqui y hay todavía mucho que no he visto! Colombia tiene una gran variedad de lugares; cuidados grandes como Bogotá y Medellín, la costa Caribe, enormes palmeras en el eje cafetero y la selva amazónica. Entre las cosas más memorables de mi viaje, incluiría la asombrosa iglesia en Ipiales llamada ´las lajas´. ¡Si estás viajando por Ecuador es un lugar que no te puedes perder! Además, la ciudad perdida, cerca de Santa Marta, es muy hermosa. ¡Se puede ver muchas cosas en los 4/5 días que dura el recorrido, incluso tribus indígenas, y la última parada vale la pena!
¡Finalmente; la música, el baile, las fiestas y las celebraciones! A los colombianos les encanta rumbear ¡Encontré una nueva pasión aquí: la salsa –tiene sentido porque he estado viviendo en la capital de la salsa! Las fiestas y los clubes son muy diferentes que allá en Inglaterra – con música cambiando de reggaetón, a Ed Sheeran y después a Bachata. ¡Pero ellos realmente saben cómo pasarla bien! Y tienen algunos festivales internacionalmente famosos – ¡si estás aquí en febrero Barranquilla es el lugar dónde estar!
¡Hay mucho más que yo podría decir sobre este hermoso país pero quise ser corto y dulce – además mi español permanece muy básico! Espero haberte dado suficientes razones para visitar Colombia y como ellos dicen aquí – ¡el riesgo es que te quieras quedar!

Why you should visit Colombia!
I have now been living in Colombia for 6 months and I have loved every second! My family and friends were shocked when I told them about the move to Colombia. Many people still view Colombia as a dangerous country, of course it still has its problems, notably corruption, but there have been so many positive changes over the past 10 years – most recently the peace agreement with the FARC. When people think about Colombia, they immediately think of Pablo Escobar and the cartel wars. But I want to tell you that Colombia is about much more and I will tell you why you should visit Colombia!
Firstly: the people. The Colombian people are amazing and some of the most welcoming people I have met. I noticed this when I first entered the country when I stayed with a Colombian family in Pasto. This has been a common theme; Colombians really do make the best hosts! But generally, the people are incredibly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. For me it is important when travelling anywhere in the world and is a huge reason why I have loved Colombia.
Secondly, there are so many incredible places to visit and so many things to see. I travelled a lot during my 6 months in Colombia and there are still a lot of things I was unable to see. There is a big variety of places here from the big cities like Bogota and Medellin, to the Caribbean coast, huge palm trees in the coffee region and the Amazonian jungle. My personal highlights include the amazing church in Ipiales called ´Las Lajas´ – which is a must see if you are travelling from Ecuador! Also, the lost city, just outside Santa Marta, is beautiful. You see so much on the 4/5 day trek and the final stop is worth it!
Finally; the music, the dancing, the partying and the celebrations! The Colombians lead the way for all of the above and I found myself a new passion here: Salsa! But that makes sense as I have been living in Cali, which is the capital of the salsa. Parties and clubs are so different to back home with music switching from reggaeton to Ed Sheeran to Bachata! But they know how to have a good time and have internationally famous festivals – if you’re here in February then Barranquilla is the place to be!
There is so much more I could say about this great country but I wanted to keep it short and sweet – plus my Spanish remains very basic! I hope I have given you enough reasons to visit Colombia, as they say here – ´the risk is that you will want to stay!´.
